Trade and the Diffusion of Migration Law, Policy and Economics

Economic globalisation including trade liberalisation has been characterised by increased cross-border mobility of the production factors labour and capital. The cross-border movement of people and capital is estimated to generate more welfare gains today than would arise from the completion of trade liberalisation in goods and services. This work package focuses on the one hand upon the nexus between international trade regulations and migration governance from the perspective of a multilayered and multicentric regime complex. It builds on the conceptual approaches developed to study the trade-migration nexus in the NCCR’s Phases I and II, but at the same time it will move significantly beyond the earlier phases by opening up the perspective of South-South relations on regional integration and how it plays out in labour migration. On the other hand, it focuses on selected political and economic effects of migration. A first project looks at how the educational mobility of the children of migrants is characterised by upward or downward movements.

Cluster 4.1

Migration Law, Policy and Economics in Regional Integration Contexts

This cluster complements international migration governance and the multi-layered analysis developed in Phase I and II with a focus on the role of regional integration units and PTAs in both North-South and South-South perspectives. This analysis will contribute to debate on labour mobility as an adaptation strategy for migrants. An economic component studies how labour mobility affects the educational upward (and downward) mobility of second generation migrants. This is tested in the European context.
