Society of International Economic Law's conference well attended by WTI delegation

Dr Rafael Leal-Arcas (Senior Research Fellow), Maria Anna Corvaglia (Doctoral Research Fellow, nccr Trade Regulation, MILE 9), Vladimir Talanov (MILE 11) and Arpit Bhutani (MILE 12) took part in the first Postgraduate and Early Professionals/Academics (PEPA) Conference organized in Hamburg by the Society of International Economic Law (SIEL) in cooperation with the Institute of Law and Economics of the University of Hamburg and Leiden University.

The conference provided a forum of discussion for young professional and researchers (post-doctoral, doctoral and master students) on emerging research areas of interest in the field of International Economic Law. The conference addressed a wide range of topics, from global trade governance to trade in energy products and regional integration, from international finance regulation to IP law and investment arbitration. The participants had the opportunity to present their papers and to receive comments from more senior professionals and scholars, like Gabrielle Marceau (WTO), Freya Baetens (Leiden), Isabelle van Damme (ECJ), Stefan Voigt (Hamburg), Markus Gehring (Cambridge), Holger  Hestermeyer (MPI Heidelberg), Simon Schropp (Sidley Austin) and Christian Tietje (Halle-Wittenberg).

 

Maria Anna Corvaglia gave an overview on the theoretical framework of her PhD research on the inclusion of labour rights into public procurement practices; and Vladimir Talanov explored crucial aspects of the regional economic integration of some CIS countries, under the light of the forthcoming accession of Russia in the WTO. In the context of “Trade and Environment” session, Rafael Leal-Arcas offered a regional approach to the future negotiations of a climate change global regime, while Arpit Bhutani presented a research on some controversial legal issues on international trade in domestically prohibited goods and hazardous substances in relation to the impact on the environment.
